Bill Gates is a major inspiration for New York-based entrepreneur Boris Mizhen, whether it is Mizhen’s real estate business, online marketing firm, or his impressive philanthropic works. As the world’s richest man with $72 billion, it is certain that much could be learned by studying the career of the famous Microsoft founder. With keen business acumen and constant dedication, Gates grew from 13-year-old software enthusiast to a leading pioneer of the 21st Century technology culture.
“He found his passion early and followed it,” describes Boris Mizhen. “This is one of the most important yet hardest parts of the business and indeed life.” In 1968, a PC company loaned a state-of-the-art $3,000 machine to Gates’ high school. He joined the Computer Club and instantly became fascinated by the possibilities of the technology. Gates met Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen here, and the two future business partners were constantly trying to get time with the equipment, going so far as to exploit a glitch in the software that tracked usage for the corporation that owned the workstations…

Top Lawyer to Combat Illegal Fishing: Microsoft Corp. co-founder Paul Allen is concerned about illegal fishing depleting fish populations and will spend $40 million to develop a system that uses satellite imagery and data-analysis software to help countries spot and catch unlicensed fishing boats.

The search for distant worlds has spurred billionaires to put their own money into space programmes. Meanwhile, Team Indus in India is pioneering a privately-funded moon mission.
American astronomer, cosmologist, astrophysicist Carl Sagan said, “Since, in the long run, every planetary civilization will be endangered by impacts from space, every surviving civilization is obliged to become spacefaring – not because of exploratory or romantic zeal, but for the most practical reason imaginable: staying alive… If our long-term survival is at stake, we have a basic responsibility to our species to venture to other worlds.”…

When the Stratolaunch aircraft rolled out of the Mojave, California Air and Space Port hangar this spring in preparation for ground testing, it was an example of the current status of design and manufacturing of composite materials, according to Collier Research. Last month the first phase of engine testing on the aircraft’s six Pratt & Whitney turbofan engines was completed.
The sizable aircraft (its wingspan is wider than a football field is long) is almost entirely fabricated from composite materials, which provide lightweight, high stiffness and strength characteristics used in aerospace, automotive, sports, medical and industrial fields…

The visually rich, compelling PBS series “Nature” returns this month for its 36th season with titles that are ready-made for classroom viewing, thanks to the rare and often spectacular footage. They are also natural tie-ins to recently celebrated titles for children.
The series kicks off with Naledi: One Little Elephant (aired Oct. 4; Gr 4 Up), which comes on the heels of Katherine Roy’s acclaimed How To Be an Elephant (Roaring Brook/Macmillan, Sept. 2017; Gr 2-6). Although the film contains statistics on the status of the African elephant population, the emphasis is on bringing up baby…

Kenya’s rhinos, elephants, and zebras pull in millions of tourism dollars and supply jobs. Poachers threaten that – but an ambitious programme is combining the influence of local communities and innovative technology to keep them at bay.
Josephine Ekiru is not nostalgic for the past. Growing up in northern Kenya in an impoverished home, she was surrounded by violence and loss. People regularly killed the wildlife she loved, and they killed each other. Tribal clashes stoked by resource scarcity and decades-long vendettas were the norm…
“On animal welfare, we will take the tough action necessary to deal with those whose callousness or greed inflicts pain and suffering on innocent creatures. At the moment the maximum sentence for animal cruelty is just six months.
I believe that when we face deliberate, calculating and sadistic behavior, we need to deploy the full force of the law to show we will not tolerate evil. Which is why we will bring forward legislation to increase punishments for the most horrific acts of animal cruelty to five-year sentences. Animals are sentient beings, they are in our care, they deserve our protection.”…
