Let’s wall off Silicon Valley

Chicago Tribune

In 1996, a documentary called “Triumph of the Nerds” — the title is a play on the 1984 American comedy film “Revenge of the Nerds,” which featured fictional fraternity wars and characters with wildly impressive names including Booger, Wormser and Ogre — gave the world an up-close-and-personal look at the giants of personal computing. Steve Jobs. Steve Wozniak. Bill Gates. Paul Allen. Everyone was there.

The real-life stars of “Triumph of the Nerds” changed the world forever, perhaps in ways, we don’t yet understand. Today in Silicon Valley, decades later, things are still busy, busy, busy — but instead of slowly churning out life-changing innovations painstakingly crafted in garages, many of the area’s latest exports seem, well, rather dicey…

Grip on Sports: Gonzaga rolls, Washington State rolls over late and the Seahawks want Schneider to continue in his role

Spokesman-Review

The Seahawks are not interested in losing their general manager unless, presumably, the Packers make an offer they can’t refuse. Maybe one of those doesn’t exist. After all, this is a crucial offseason for Seattle, as crucial as any the Hawks have gone through since Schneider was lured out his hometown, Green Bay, to run the Seattle front office.

Why would Paul Allen want to let him go now, especially considering Allen gave Schneider a bunch more money in his new contract specifically asking, in return, a commitment in the form of dropping a clause that allowed him to return to Wisconsin…

11 Inspirational Tech Guys & How Their Companies Changed The World Despite A Humble Beginning

Dotemirates

A very very young Bill GatesFounded in 1975, Bill Gates and Paul Allen, began Microsoft in a garage in Albuquerque, New Mexico. What they didn’t have in the way of office space, was compensated by a great deal of determination, grit, and raw talent, all of which helped propel Microsoft to the pinnacle of technological innovation for the greater part of three decades.

Popular micro-blogging and breaking news website, Twitter began as a day-long brainstorming session in 2006 at a small office on South Park Avenue, San Francisco. The idea began as an SMS service that people could participate in as groups…

Commentary: Glad Schneider is staying; now there’s work to be done, changes to be made

Q13 Fox

To me, Schneider is still one of the best talent evaluators in the league. The Packers’ interest confirmed as much.

And fortunately, whoever denied Green Bay permission to interview Schneider, whether it’s Paul Allen or Carroll or both, feels that way too…

New Climate Mega-Donors Emerge – Wrong. While existing climate funders made big new commitments, no new mega-donors entered this space, although Paul Allen sent an important signal of his strong interest here…

Dame who? Blazers take down Spurs anyways

NBC Sports

The question is how much time is owner Paul Allen willing to give? With the NBA’s sixth-highest payroll and a group that has largely been together for three seasons, this was supposed to be a season of progress.

The Blazers have improved in two key areas – defense and their record on the road – but have dramatically slipped in two areas that are usually a hallmark of Stotts and Portland teams – offense and homecourt advantage…

Bats, Blimps, and Giant Camera Chips: 2018’s Top Tech Quick Hits

IEEE Spectrum

Sharks and rays are threatened worldwide, but even scientists who study them haven’t been able to quantify the extent of the problem. Vulcan Inc., in Seattle, a philanthropic entity of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, aims to fill in the missing data.

Its three-year Global FinPrint project is counting sharks, rays, and other marine life around coral reefs, using remote underwater video stations as well as a video-processing AI that helps identify animals caught on camera. The survey of 400 reefs is scheduled to wrap up this year…

IoT drives progress towards low-power technology

Financial Times

Similarly, researchers at the University of Washington in the US demonstrated a batteryless smartphone this summer, which can run on power harvested either from ambient radio signals or light.

According to Shyam Gollakota, associate professor in the university’s Paul G Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, this could be the first functioning mobile phone to consume almost zero power: “To achieve the really, really low power consumption that you need to run a phone by harvesting energy from the environment, we had to fundamentally rethink how these devices are designed,” he says…

America’s stance on elephant trophies? It’s complicated

abc 7

In November, the President made clear his opinion on the killings had not changed, tweeting he would, “be very hard pressed to change my mind that this horror show in any way helps conservation of elephants or any other animal.”

From 2007 to 2014, elephant populations in the African savanna plummeted 30%, according to the Great Elephant Census, a two-year study that mapped and tracked elephant herds across 18 countries…

Aerial surveys of Botswana’s Elephants

Country Life

In comparison, the Kruger National Park has just 17 433 elephants, according to the Great Elephant Census 2016. In Chobe National Park, where you can find the highest concentration of elephants in Botswana, in places along the riverfront in the dry season there can be an estimated five elephants per square kilometre (I have heard widely differing opinions on the elephant population in Chobe National Park).

Certainly, they are a common sight in the country, not just in the bush, but strolling down the streets of Kasane. But then finding a warthog recumbent outside your tent, or strolling importantly around town followed by a line of piglets, doesn’t even raise an eyebrow in this town…
